Sons of the West,
Red, White & Blue
The History of the famous Red, White and Blue hoops.
Home ground changes. Mascot changes. Jumper design changes. Name changes.
A lot of things have changed since the 1880s when football started being played in the little working-class town to the west of the Melbourne.
But one thing that has never changed – since 1883 when that little working-class town of Footscray got their own team, they have worn threads of red, white and blue.
A history full of champion players have since worn those famous tri-colours through famous and infamous moments that’s included winning:
3 x VFL/AFL/AFLW Premierships
11 x VFA/VFL Premierships
1 – and the only – Championship of Victoria
6 x Reserve Grade Premierships
1 x Supreme Court battle reversing a take-over.
As we approach 140 years of the Footscray Football Club and enter an exciting new era, it’s time to look back on the fabric at the core of the resilience and tough footy club we love.
